DOI: 10.14320/EMK.2013.004.en Abstract There are plenty of skin care products for children and infants available on the market, however, in order to minimize the risk of allergic reactions it is important to choose cosmetics that are effective, and safe. Objective: To assess cosmetic products recommended by leading Polish pediatric institutes for the presence of substances with known sensitizing potential. Material and methods: 60 cosmetic products, including 18 recommended by the Children’s Health Center and 42 recommended by the Institute of Mother and Child were assessed for the presence of sensitizers listed in the Cosmetics Directive and for the presence of other substances with sensitizing potential known from the literature. Results: Out of the 60 assessed products, 58 (97%) contained at least one substance with known sensitizing potential. The largest numbers of such sensitizers were present in the cosmetics produced by the company Ziaja: body firming butter "Ziajka" (13 potential sensitizers, which may be transferred to the child through direct contact with the mother's body), and body lotion for babies and infants from 1st month of age "Ziajka" (14 potential sensitizers). Conclusions: A vast majority of the products recommended by the Institute of Mother and Child and the Children’s Health Center contain ingredients with known sensitizing properties. Despite the recommendations granted by prestigious institutes, choosing a safe cosmetic product for the child still poses a big challenge. Keywords: cosmetics for children, recommendations of research institutes, Children’s Health Center, Institute of Mother and Child, sensitizing potential, cosmetics allergy. |
